Why Twitter ??

. Friday, July 30, 2010

Well that’s a big question which demands more than a suffice convincing answers. So I will try to help it with some ideas of my own [well tats what Preetam the music director would have said :D] The rudimentary question Why twitter ??.. And the fundamental answer ; with the advent of the word "Social Networking" the means to practise it is changing every chronic season. It started with hi5, orkut.com (a dead soul now) then grew up to Facebook (with miniplayers like QQ, Myspace,  xyz also hanging out in same space) and now Twitter. Well I have been using twitter for quite a while. Albeit I publish nonsense but then there are some serious players who consummated the idea. I have been looking for some answers for "WHY TWITTER??" After some descent amount of online studies probably I cooked something and google.com had beens such a relief. [and dare you doubt google.com :D]

Twitter comes from the word tweet which means a weak chirping sound of a small bird. So guys who like gossiping and fussing about every sadistic and gregarious nonsense; well that’s TWITTER for you. To be honest, my first impression of Twitter was that it was for folks who had way too much time on their hands who narcissistically wanted to broadcast every random thought that crossed their brains.[As if someone cared how theirs morning coffee tasted; if they had a proper shower; if they slept well and freaky stuff kinda] While this may be true in some instances, there are also some very smart, professional, forward thinking people whom I respect who are using Twitter intelligently. Yep dude, you heard me – I just used the words “intelligently” and “Twitter” in the same sentence. ;) Amazed, Bewildered, Astounded.. Well see for yourself

1. Microblogging

This one is obvious, but in the rush to put Twitter to other uses, many people forget its first use as a micro-blogging platform. And it is still one of the best uses. It's easy to make a quick telling the world what you are doing, how good your morning coffee tastes or how bad your lunch went. But then you must have sufficient followers to respond you back "Oh it feels nice that you had such a ambrosial lunch". For a news blogger, the 140 character limit in Twitter can be extremely liberating.

2. Quick answers

The idea of crowdsourcing has never been so quick! You can ask all sorts of questions to the Twitter universe, from what is the capital of Alaska to what people think of a particular brand of condom. [I am sure they might just poke up there too] the underlying fact is the more friends you have, the more detailed answers you will receive. [Because humans love to poke :-)]

3. Finding a job

Whether you just got laid off or you are sick of your current job, Twitter can help you get a new job. Not only can you announce to the world that you are looking for employment,[do not expect multinationals' call but you are bound to get empathies [@username don’t worry dude you deserve better as if they are some kind of prescient] but its said many companies post their job openings on Twitter.[I haven't seen any or otherwise I might have to widen my gaze :-\]

4. Keeping up with the news

From newspapers to magazines to TV stations and cable news, it seems everyone is adopting Twitter as the coolest thing since sliced bread. The coolest part is that it makes Twitter a great way to keep track of news. Sachin scored a double ton today and its on twitter flooding your wall but then this has again a byside - [someone has to watch news/match/event to holler it on twitter and as a matter of fact every second person is doing so.]

5. Arrange a lunch with friends

Twitter can be very useful for arranging a time and place for congregation. It's like a conference call with text messaging. The interesting thing about Twitter is that it feels like an intimate IM session, but it’s actually not private at all. So, if you have a regular lunch date with a group of people, or just want to arrange a get together, Twitter can be a great way to nail down a time and place that works for everyone[Because people find it such a pain in ass to log on to gtalk client these days]

6. Find out what people really think about the latest movie

Twitter allows to use the search feature to check out what the buzz is on the latest release at the theaters. Sure, you could check what the critics have to say, but their opinion isn't always in line with what people actually think of the film. Twitter can be a great way to find out if the movie is a bomb or a bust, so you don't have to waste your money on a real dud.[That's why albeit Raavan performed pathetically at theatres it downsized the loss in Indian Economy; and moreover I don’t see JrBachhan tweeting these days too :D]

7. Becoming involved with politics

Barack Obama laid the profound notes, and politicians are increasingly turning to social media sites like Twitter. Not only is this providing a great way for politicians to get the word out, but it is allowing them to stay connected to their constituents.[Doesn’t really matter; they hardly visit their constituencies after elections]What better way to tell your senator what you think about a key vote than to send him or her a tweet? [Why not Mr. Minister?? After all everyone has a broadband connection] But politics on Twitter goes far beyond just following politicians. The Iran election crisis showed what a political force Twitter could be as it not only allowed Iranian citizens to break through the walls Iran hoped to keep up around the events, but also let people from around the world show their support by turning their profile pictures green.[So next time honorable Shivsena wanna protest against Maharashtra Government's import laws they should probably consider the idea of turning their twitter account WHITE rather than overturning tons of milk]

8. Keep up with your favorite team

Twitter's search feature can be a great way to track trends or keep up with a particular subject. And if you are a fan of sports, it can be a great way to really connect with the team. Not only are many sports players on Twitter, but you have the media, chairman of sports committees' and millions of fans to keep you updated on the latest and greatest. Can't get to a TV when your favorite team is on? Just follow the tweets on Twitter. Not only will you get regular score updates, but you'll get some fun color commentary to go along with it.[Probably our very own IPL chairman would have conceived the idea to be fanciful but Sir ,Tweet is just a technical version of chirping and the world is so longing to grab an opportune moment to get behind people's arse]

9. Helpful outbursts, or in other words, screaming your rage

We've all had one of those days, whether it was someone pulling in front of us in traffic, or getting served the wrong type of coffee, it is sometimes these little things that can put us in a bad mood for the rest of the day.The sagely advice is to let it out, but to who? It's not like most places of employment have a handy punching bag, and it's probably not smart to vent to your boss. SO then ?? Welcome to lalaland; that's where Twitter can be really helpful because it lets you rage to millions of people.[Of course no one is interested if you are taloned in a heavy mumbai traffic though you might just feel elated…byside some idiots may pour in some sympathy tweets too.]
Just remember to watch the language.[Probably no one is watching you too].

And last but not the least

10. Fun and Games

One of the most recent activities that is becoming popular on Twitter is the use of third-party games to interact with Twitter accounts. For example, Spymaster allows you to create your own spy ring using your followers as spies. You generate money for your spy ring by completing tasks either solo or in real-time with other spymasters.[The money that cant even buy you your dinner :-\ ]

So I hope by this time you might have enough reasons to answer out Why Twitter

P.S - The Bracketed thoughts belong to my brash intellectually incapable mind so you can avoid it :-) for everything else there is google.com

Happy tweeting :-)
If you consider to join twitter post reading this or you are already on twitter  you can

Its 11:30 pm. And I have clearly no idea what I am doing. Talking on the physcial perspective I am online; signed in throught client for gtalk and simultaneously have my facebook acount logged in; though I still say I am so eluded. Every day I login facebook almost 10 times; makes the thefty scan through all the post. I clearly do not intend to like/comment even a single post; havent updated my status post since a month;have'nt uploaded any pic; hardly activated my so offline chat service. In short I am dead on social networking grounds. But this is not weird. What is a real bizzarre is that I log on to it almost a score times daily. Even when my snaily internet connection denies the every aspecting of establishing a secured connection I try hard.
But this is not hard. Hard is the fact to believe why I do it. Why the fuck I do it every now and then. My gtalk status shows I am practising silence; but that’s a cover I suppose I used to hide myself; but then this is not important. Important is what why am I doin it?Am I dodging myself from the world. Am I trying to cast aside the so called social group I have made. God these fanciful name. They are such a mess !!
